You Know When the Men Are Gone provides an intimate look at life on an American military base through the eyes of the families of American soldiers deployed to Iraq. Fallon’s stunning collection of interconnected stories is described by the Los Angeles Times as a “lovely and wrenching first book...gripping...compelling...extraordinary circumstances.”

Word For Word is the theatre company that transforms classic and contemporary fiction into performance works for the stage. Founded in 1993 by alumnae Susan Harloe and JoAnne Winter, Word for Word performs short stories in their entirety, preserving the author’s language and honoring his or her literary intent. Fellow SF State graduates often play key roles in Word for Word productions on and off stage, including company member Delia McDougall, the costume and properties designer in You Know When the Men Are Gone.

This performance is part of SF State’s Presidential Investiture celebration and a fundraiser for a scholarship in memory of Political Science Professor Matthew Stolz, in support of the SF State Students First campaign. The fund has been established in his name to reward a working-class scholar who shows excellence in political theory—in other words, a scholar very much like Matthew Stolz himself.
